Install Mesh on a Split-Rail

A split-rail fence can usually hold in large animals like cows and horses, but it won't hold in smaller animals without a wire mesh upgrade. Lift the roll of mesh vertically, next to the first fence post in the fence line. Unroll a couple of feet of it. Mesh can be added to the fence from the bottom up to hold in baby cows, baby horses, sheep, goats and pigs. Measure the height of the fence from the ground up to the top fence rail with a tape measure. The mesh also helps keep unwanted animals out of the fenced-in area. Fencing mesh comes in plastic, nylon and metal wire materials. Walk back along the split fence rails between the two fence posts and staple the mesh every 12 inches. Stretch the mesh from the ground up to ensure it stays tight. Repeat this process until the entire split-rail fence has been covered with mesh. Unroll the mesh to the next fence post in the fence line. Pull it tight and staple it the same way you did the first post. Each of these types of mesh has enough flexibility to make it suitable for split-rail fence installation. This will assist you in finding the correct height of mesh. It comes in heights of 2 feet to 6 feet. Staple the mesh to the fence post every 6 inches. Go back to the roll of mesh and unroll it to the third fence post. Pull it tight and staple it. Walk back and staple it to the fence rails.
